Before

This young lady had breast augmentation 10 years ago. Her preoperative bra size was a B cup. Her implants were Mentor smooth, round, moderate profile saline implants place under the muscle. The implants were 325 cc and were filled to 350 cc. Her postoperative bra size was a D cup from Victoria's Secret. She retained all the normal feeling in her breasts. 

After

Her first set of after photos were taken 6 months after surgery. Her breasts were soft and both looked and felt very natural. She was pleased, as was I. Ten years passed and she returned (I advise all patients to come back every other year for a check up, but few do). She'd had a child four years earlier and breast fed for 3 months. She give a history of 6 months of episodic pain in her breasts, unrelated to her cycle. She did not have any other health problems. She discontinued caffeinated beverages because she read this can cause breast pain. She also wondered if she needed to replace her ten year old implants. Her cosmetic appearance ten years later was superb and still very natural. 

Breast pain is common in young women, with or without implants, and can come and go at various times of life. It can be related to caffeine intake, normal hormonal fluctuations, and/or other factors that are poorly understood. Measures to control this include over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, stopping all caffeine intake, take a vitamin E supplement, and trying one of the oral birth control pills. In severe cases and anti-estrogen pill can be tried. Nothing in her history or exam suggested this might be due to what is popularly called breast implant illness. I recommended trying some or all of the above measures for a month or two to see if they might help. I reassured her that her implants did not need to be changed merely because of their age. I told her to return anytime if she continues to have issues or in two years for a routine check up. 

Here she is ten years and one pregnancy later.
