Patient - Breast Reconstruction

Before

This 62 year old woman had cancer of the left breast. She elected to undergo removal of both breasts, for treatment on the left and prevention of cancer in the future on the right. She had tissue expanders placed immediately. Soon after that, she retired and moved from her home in Alaska to Florida where she came to see me to complete the reconstruction.

I completed the expansion of her expanders and then replaced these with permanent 450 cc gel implants. The first pair placed were felt to be a bit small and a few months later these were replaced with 500 cc implants, with which she was very pleased. A few months after that, bilateral nipple/areola reconstruction was done using a "skate" flap and full thickness grafts from the inner thighs. The final result is shown.

She is pleased. I offered some permanent tattooing to even out the color of the nipples but she was happy with them as they were.

She is shown with fully expanded tissue expanders, prior to changing these out for silicone gel implants.

After

Here is shown with the completed reconstruction, including reconstruction of the nipple/areola complexes with a small flap and skin grafts from the thighs. She was offered tattooing of the nipple area to better match the skin graft color but she did not object to the contrast and was happy with her result as is.
