Before

This patient had previously undergone treatment of a cancer in her left breast with a lumpectomy and radiation therapy years earlier. She now presented with the typical complaints of patients with large heavy breasts: back, neck, and shoulder pain; rashes under her breasts. Her bra size is a 38 DDD. She is an excellent candidate for a breast reduction but the prior radiation greatly raises her risks of healing problems on the left. Her large size dictates that her nipples be transferred as grafts and success of this is also compromised by the radiation history. She was extensively counseled and desired to give the surgery a try.

After

To lower her risks of postoperative healing issues on the left, she underwent a course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy starting 2 weeks before her surgery and continuing this for 3 weeks after. The surgery reduced her breasts by 2 3/4 lb on the left and 2 1/4 lb on the right. She went on to heal without any problems whatsoever. Her symptoms all resolved. Her postoperative bra size is a D cup.
